SLP and OT/PT Roles and Responsibilities in IEP Meetings

Description: Jose Martin, Attorney at Law, will present information related to the roles of SLPs and OT/PTs in Individualized Educational Planning (IEP) meetings. The IEP team meeting is the primary forum for both educational decision-making and parent participation in the special education process. This session will address key IEP team procedural requirements and their legal implications, including proper IEP team configuration, excusing of required members, notice of IEP meetings and its contents, proper sequence of decision-making, use of interpreters, and other steps and measures to ensure meaningful parental participation. In addition, the session will address helpful techniques to facilitate the meeting process, such as pre-planning steps, avoiding predetermination claims, dealing with contentious advocates and parents, helpful types of questions to ask of the team, measures to deal with conflict and disagreement, and types of statements school staff should avoid. Q & A opportunities will be provided through the session.

Root Causes, Real Solutions: Developing Behavioral Strategies that Work

Description: This six-hour presentation will provide participants with information about the connections between the brain and emotions, memory, relationships, and behavior.  Participants will learn about how issues such as anxiety and depression can impact a child’s relationships, learning, and behaviors.  Participants will also learn about effective behavioral strategies that can be implemented in their work with students who are experiencing behavioral issues. Participants will have the opportunity to examine case studies and to work in small groups with colleagues to share, discuss, and practice effective strategies and solutions specific to their individual caseloads and therapy goals.

Participants may wish to bring a lunch.  One hour is provided for lunch and it can be a challenge to leave for off-campus lunch and return to the event within one hour at this location.  ASHA CEUs can not be awarded for individuals who are more than 15 minutes late to the start of any portion of the event.
